Why are the custom fonts I installed unavailable for use in Tapestry?

In order to display correctly in Tapestry's timeline and detail view, a custom font must include all of the following typefaces:

• Regular
• Italic
• Bold
• Bold Italic

If a particular face is missing these variants the font isn't displayed in the list of available fonts.
